Here are more photos of the events that transpired on 15 Mar 2008. Read the Singapore Democrats’ response to the statement by the police.
The protesters arriving at Parliament House while the media take pictures
Gathering in front of Parliament House
Arranging the grocery items which symbolise the rash of price increases and the rising cost of living which Singaporeans have had to put up with.
Addressing the media. The second photo shows the cameraman from the local pro-government news media, Channel News Asia (CNA). Frankly, I don’t know why they bother to record what’s happening because they will either show a few seconds of what went on along with a bias report OR nothing at all.
Family, friends and supporters standing under the shade near the group.
These four photos show plainclothes policemen video recording. The first and second photos are quite obvious. In the third, the two chaps on the right are policemen. And in the fourth, its the two guys away from the crowd.
Gathered together for a group photo.
Yap Kheng Ho aka Uncle Yap, in a blue cap and red T-shirt, a supporter of the SDP, video recording while the plainclothes policemen video record him and the rest of the group.
Protest placards arrive. And there’s CNA again as you can see in the fourth photo. Sheesh.
Police officers approach the group and tell them to disperse saying that its illegal. While CASE gets away with it. Sheesh…and double sheesh!
The protesters listen to the police officers but continue to peacefully walk followed by the media, family, friends, supporters, etc, etc.
They are again told to stop and disperse.
Protesters crossing the road.
They are stopped again by the police in front of Funan shopping mall. The two guys on the extreme right are from CNA (yep them again!) and the two next to them are the police.
These 8 photos show the police surrounding the peaceful protesters before making the arrests (and that’s putting it mildly!).
Dragged away into waiting police vans.
People outside Funan watching. The chap carrying the placards away is a policeman.
Forcefully removed and dragged away into police vans with the eyes of the people and the media on them.
lol.. it doesn’t matter if it’s peaceful or not cuz it’s Singapore. They won’t allow any aggression or chaos among the citizens cuz the country is so small they cannot leave any rooms for riot or protest which can easily make Singapore crumble (especially civil war).
Nice try but Singapore government wants obedient citizens. If you don’t like it the only choice you have is to leave. And you wonder why CNA and the government is complaining about high migration rates.
Whatever is right or wrong.. it boils down to this..
This is Singapore. Lan lan suck thumb.
LEE ky said many singaporeans migrated, but he does not know it is because of its dictatorship that made so many singaporeans migrated.FT esp. from china are very obedient, so LeeAP likes them and approve their citizenship immediately. What tak boleh tahan, Malaysia boleh, singapore lagi boleh.
What the f*** are our leaders LKY, LHL & WKS so scared of a
bunch of peaceful protesters ?
Why can’t our Gahmen just let them protest and see at the
end of the day what harm can these protesters do to Singapore ?
Is it any wonder that it appears that our PAP leaders don’t even
have the guts to face this kind of any opposition !!!
In response, to Lucas’ “Lan Lan Suck Thumb”. It is due to such common attitudes among Singaporeans that the government is slowly but surely able to gain their way. Law does not imply justice. ERPs, CPF, are in the range of law makers/politicians that covertly subdue the working class.
The ministers’ salary issue is plain ridiculous. What can we do about it? Well the first step is to realize. How many of us realize the covert white-collar crime that is being committed? Just a small change in policy can affect the millions of Singaporeans. Perhaps, a slight increase of taxation can result in the poverty of thousands.
Protests leading to riots, or even a civil war? I can’t decide whether to laugh or cry. Given how Singaporeans in general are so law abiding and proud of our modernity compared to our immediate neighbours, that would be the last thing to happen. If riots ever broke out, our country would already be in shambles and violent behaviour merely reflects that. They wouldn’t be the cause.
This is our country as much as it is yours. Why should we have to leave because we don’t like it? We are citizens and we get to decide what Singapore should be, not the PAP government. The government merely exists to protect our rights so that we find our own way to liberty and happiness with those rights.
Since the PAP government routinely violates our constitutional rights to freedom of speech and assembly, it is illegitimate. The only just thing to do is to oppose it.
You may prefer to suck thumb and LPPL. We do not.
Right or wrong DOES matter. We are human beings and are not amoral.
As for why the PAP government could not let us proceed, I’ve explained it in another comment here:
